The deadlift works every muscle in the body from head to toe. A great way to add some mass and build strength. I try to cycle this exercise in order to reap the best benefits from it.

John,

Thanks for the comments. I have been working on not lowering my hips too low as you don't want to turn the deadlift into a squat. I definitely want to work on shifting my hips back farther. Remember, that the deadlift is a posterior chain exercise. Let me know how you have used the deadlift in your workouts as I would be interested to know.

Lecharles,

The reason that I do not wear shoes are because of the nerve endings and proprioceptors located in the feet. They help send signals to teach the body to move better in space or improve limb control. The foot is always in contact in the ground, so it makes sense to make sure the nerves are active to allow other muscles to function properly. Also, I am in closer contact with the ground during the deadlift which means the distance the bar has to travel to the hips is shorter. I hope this is clear and please let me know if anyone needs further explaining.

I think you that you need to drop your hips big guy. Once you grip the bar, drop your hips as far BACK and DOWN as you can, while taking your chest out. This will allow you to isolate your quads, protect your lower back, and help with the your flexibility with your offensive line stance. Do not be afraid to reset after each rep, especially if you are in the 3 rep range
