We double at point of attack on most everything( veer, midline, trap, GT), so we always want to "hug the double". I was the olive guy for three seasons and switch to RBs. So I teach them what the o line is looking for so we are on the same page. But the aiming point is more or less the butt crack of the double team guy. We want to stay away from the read keys or trap blocks. When we go to frames, I hold a hand shield at the double and if I can't trouch them with it them it's too wide. It's especially important when running veer to a 3 & 5 tech side.

It's been a while since anyone's talked on here, but for you guys that run the veer out of the gun, what's your back's aiming point?

Gotcha.

Coach Welch Comment by Coach Welch on January 6, 2012 at 12:22pm

We do outside zone block the PSDE, we found that most of the time as we can get contat with him our RB could out flank him.  In fact as a zone team we started running this rather then plane old outside zone, it also complemented our sprint/roll-out series.

I like both of those.  Reading the PSLB makes sense to me because I always thought the BSG would never get to that fast-flowing LB and then it would turn into a cut-back, like you said, Gardner.  Coach Welch, what do you do with the PSDE?  Do you block it like outside zone?

Coach Welch Comment by Coach Welch on January 5, 2012 at 2:48pm

We ran the Jet Read this year, we started reading the PSDE, through evolution we went to reading the PSLB which our PSG could never reach.

We have but the running lane on pulls is really far inside.  When we read and replace, we felt we were still in the defensive flow.  Our qb was reading and immediatley cutting back to the center if not the backside A gap.  So we trashed the play and now run a qb lead off of jet.  The guard is leading back through, we kinda felt that is where the wave of the defense ended so we attack it with an extra guy. It was a great third and med to long play.

Do any of you run the jet read?  If so, do you read the PSDE and use power blocking rules up front?

We are no huddle with every playing having a wristband. Three panels of plays, each panel has a key word to reference the panel. All of are plays are on the panels, pass pro is on the pass plays, color coded for snap count, but the plays are listed fully. Formation, back hole, run concept, ex; "ace loop 34 veer", so ace formation, loop motion( rt slot wr motions left and at snap reverse back right to be pitchman) 3 back( rb in pistol. "4" means hip) 4 hole, veer, reading first man head up outside tackle.

If we run split back 3 is left back and 4 is right. Ace 3 is pistol, 4 means on qb hip, these are the same for the two back pistol formation, we call it king and queen, depending on if the 4 back is to the strong or week side.

Nice part about king and queen is the flexablity, we can run veer to one side with three different looks,
Twins rt king 34 veer
Twins rt king 44 veer
Twins rt queen 34 veer
First number is the dive back.

Also run iso & trap from it, as wells as GT and power. It's pretty much just offset I formation....

Coach Welch, that's good stuff.  I like ace whether it's in the gun, pistol or under center because of throwing the defense for a loop and I agree with the principles you talked about with your personnel.

Cody, that's what we do vs defenses that spin down and stunt into our motion side.

How do you guys call your stuff?  Are you a "Dallas is Draw" "Iowa is Iso", etc or do you number your plays?  Are you no huddle?  Personally, I like numbering my runs and wording pass plays and no-huddling it in and tagging random numbers to pass protections so the QB is saying the same for runs and passes.
