O-LineWorld

The world's first online community dedicated to the offensive line

I coach 5/6 grade football. We are forced to run a straight T formation offense. Minnesota follows the NFHS rule book with a couple of minor tweaks. I can't seem to get a full rule book from anybody to look at what constitutes a legal o-line split. Can it be 1/3/5 yards between as long as the entire line is uniform, or can the guards and center be at 1 foot while the tackles and TE's are evenly split at 3-5yards apiece? Anyone able to shed some light?

Thanks, Great site!

I think a good rule of thumb at the youth level is the less experienced your OL is the smaller the splits. There's no way I'd split 5/6 graders 3-5 feet much less 3-5 yards. Either way, I HIGHLY recommend  you have a few plays where you're double teaming at least one defender. There's going to be games where you'll have to rely on your OL to win the game. Practice the first two steps (fit and freeze) alot - on a sled or man-to-man, board drills and double-teaming. Make it fun and agressive and your OL will dominate.
