What is the best everday drill for young tackles to learn how to kick slide? I try a lot of different drills and I have never really been happy with any of them. My other question is what is the best drill to tie in the punch with the kick slide? Any suggestions or thoughts?

I've gone with the K.I.S.S. solution to teach this. I've been getting my tackles lining up with D ends outside them, Then simply calling a cadence with a cone in at 5-7 step drop distance. It also gets them used to having a D end exploding out at them.
I have incorporated a drill I learned from Coach Devine at Boston College. He will align the defender at different angles on different reps. he has the tackle (also uses this with guards), kick to cover the defender. Once the tackle is in proper position he says go and the defender comes across the line into the tackle. This phase teaches the brace for contact and the punch timing and strike. The defender retreats and on the command he again attacks the tackle again eliciting a strike. The defender retreats one more time and upon command attacks the tackle. The players engage and a full pass rush ensues with in or out moves included
Matt,
Thanks for the input. I use that principle as much as I can for just about every phase. It just seems that young tackles always struggle a little bit with that part of pass protection; however there is alot to be said for just doing the basic movement over and over and over and making it as live as possible. Thanks again.

Tim,

Thanks for the idea and I like that idea. You can work on their footwork and see if they get themselves into the proper angle before they punch. It looks like this would also help them keep the right inside/out relationship when they are setting up. I think I will give this a try. Thanks.

I learned a drill from Coach Pittman at UNC this spring. He called it Wide, Wider, Widest. Offensive tackle lines up with a defender in a 5 technique, then the defender in a 7 technique and then in a 9 technique. On cadance the first rep is getting proper position against the 5 with most likely a kick set (one kick, post foot staying place), then the next rep for the same offensive lineman is against a 7 technique (kick set almost vertically to cut off angle to the QB, while keeping inside leverage), then likewise against a 9 technique. These different reps consecutively will allow the o-lineman to see the appropriate sets. You also can start a defensive lineman in a 5 technique offside so the tackle really has to work vertically to regain positon against the DL.
