Hey guys... Sorry if my posts always seem to revolve around staying healthy, but I'm 36 years old and this is unfortunately my reality.

Does anyone suffer from foot pain in their cleats?  Mine is almost instant as soon as I start running drills and it is agonizing to the point it takes the fun out of practice.  I have tried switching shoes (I have Nikes and Under Armour and neither is any better).  I tried the over the counter orthotics and they don't seem to help.  At least the ones I tried didn't.

I have had plantar faciatis before but I've got that pretty well under control.  The pain is more towards the centre/arch of the foot.  I play guard usually around 320 pounds.  I'm looking to get down to 290-300 for next season which should help somewhat I would hope.

Anyone else have this problem or suggestions?

Thanks!

Hey Danny,
I can empathize with your discomfort. I learned a long time ago to take care of my dogs. As big guys (I played 15 years @ about 350) who's job it is to be quick on their feet, it behooves us to take care of them. My first piece of advice is to get a pedicure! I know - kinda metrosexual, but amazing in the effect it will have on your feet. As for footwear, I have always shied away from Nike and Under Armour as I have a wider foot. I also found that molded cleats as opposed to screw in 7 studs were more comfortable. I know they're not as stylish, but try and get a hold of some New Balance if you can - very helpful. Also, try to find some prescription orthotics - ones that are measured and custom fitted to your feet and arch. If you can't find them or get them, try a product (can't recall what they're called exactly) but you put them in the oven for a few minutes to soften them and then form them to your feet - semi custom! As for any cramping or plantar faciatis flare-ups, use a golf ball and roll your foot on it while sitting down. Better done after a shower as the warmth with allow the tissues and structures of the foot to be more pliable and flexible. Take care of the dogs!
P.S. another trick I would use when my feet hurt was to resort to the old stand-by acronym for injury - RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Ice your feet/ankles, use an Ace/tensor to wrap them, and sleep with your feet elevated on a few pillows. Sometimes just the ice (and some anti-inflam's) will reduce the discomfort while the wrapping and elevation will reduce the blood pressure in all the tight structures of the foot.
Thanks a lot, Matt. I should be able to get orthotics through my work and will look into that. I'll start hunting for a New Balance cleat. I really appreciate the help.
